September is Hunger Action Month: Join Us in Taking Action
“More than 50 million people turned to food banks—more than at any point in the last decade. In every community, people are working hard to feed their families. Each person is our neighbor. And each person deserves the nutritious food we all need to thrive.”
-Feeding America
Every September, food banks, nonprofits, and communities across the country join together for Hunger Action Month, a national campaign led by Feeding America to raise awareness about hunger and inspire meaningful action.
At Loudoun Hunger Relief, this month is close to our hearts. For nearly 35 years, we’ve walked alongside our neighbors, working to ensure that everyone in Loudoun County has access to the nutritious food they need to live, learn, and grow.
Hunger in Loudoun County
While Loudoun has one of the highest average household income numbers in the country, hunger still exists—often quietly. Loudoun’s cost of living is also one of the highest in the nation. According to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap (2023), an estimated 32,230 people in Loudoun County—about 7.5% of our population—are at risk of food insecurity.
These are our neighbors: working parents, seniors on fixed incomes, and children who rely on school meals. Hunger doesn’t always look the way we expect, but it is present in every community, including ours.

30 Days, Many Ways to Take Action
Hunger Action Month is about more than awareness—it’s about taking small, meaningful steps together as a community. We’ve created a Hunger Action Month Calendar with 30 days of activities to help you learn, reflect, advocate, and act in support of food security for our neighbors.
How You Can Help This Month
- Donate: Support our work with a financial contribution that helps us provide our neighbors with nutritious food.
- Volunteer: Give your time to help sort food, stock shelves, or serve neighbors.
- Spread the word: Follow us on social media and share our posts to raise awareness.
- Wear orange: Orange is the color of hunger awareness. On Hunger Action Day, September 9, 2025, wear orange, snap a photo, and tag us @LoudounHunger and @FeedingAmerica.
Together, we can make this September a month of compassion, learning, and action.
