Honoring Martin Luther King JR. Day Through a Week of Service

Each year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day reminds us that strengthening our communities happens through action. MLK Day is recognized as a National Day of Service, a time when people across the country come together to volunteer, support their neighbors, and make a difference.
Last week, Loudoun Hunger Relief was honored to witness that spirit of service in action. Dr. King once said, “Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.” Last week, that message came to life through the dedication of local volunteer groups who chose to spend their time helping our neighbors facing hunger.
Throughout the week, we welcomed four volunteer groups: Kaiser Permanente, Warby Parker, Asurion, and the Xi Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. These groups joined us in our warehouse and pantry to help with some of our most essential work: sorting food donations and packing emergency food boxes. Thanks to their hard work and generosity, they packed 216 emergency food boxes and sorted 12,100 pounds of food! A tremendous contribution that helps ensure families in Loudoun County have access to nutritious food.
We are deeply grateful to every volunteer who showed up last week with compassion, energy, and a willingness to help. Service is one of the most powerful ways to care for our neighbors, and last week was a meaningful reminder of what we can accomplish together. Thank you to Kaiser Permanente, Warby Parker, Asurion, the Xi Xi Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, and all our volunteers who choose to volunteer year-round.
